Here are a couple of articles about the why behind the drought condition in the West California drought: What’s causing it? and Extreme Fire Danger, Record Highs in California as Drought Worsens

The drought conditions in California have exploded:

Current 1/14/2014 1.43 4.39 4.27 27.21 62.71 0.00
Last Week 1/7/2014 1.43 4.32 6.71 59.94 27.59 0.00

The percentages of D2 and D3 have really switched. This transition in to deeper drought conditions will not good for the horticultural/agricultural production and fire threats are very real early this early.
